moonier boathouse

September 30, 2012 by thearchitectskitchen

Dennis & Victoria Moonier hired Emily Réfi to transform their 60′s boathouse into a floating weekend retreat on the Columbia river. With a shared appreciation of modernity, compact living and sustainability, Emily designed a 480sf residence above 1280sf of boat storage, utility and shop space in collaboration with Monte Ypma. The living quarters were pulled back from the lower walls like a ship’s “bridge” and capped with a floating roof plane that provides passive solar and shelter from the harsh […]

rummer house

September 30, 2012 by thearchitectskitchen

The courtyard house is one of a handful of mid-century modern homes designed and built by Robert Rummer in SW Portland.  Noted for exposed wood structure and dramatic cantilevered flat roofs, the iconic homes are praised for their light and connection to the outdoors – and maligned when said flat roofs spring a leak in our northwest climate. <After remodel> <Original house circa 1966> During a previous remodel, the original radiant heat in the concrete floor had been damaged beyond […]

réfi house

September 30, 2012 by thearchitectskitchen

Emily’s personal residence in North Portland was an opportunity to express aesthetic ideals and experiment with her own domestic environment. Modestly sized at 1600 sf, the interior is open and adaptable, allowing for spaces to be redefined to accommodate future needs. The building’s aesthetic expresses the inherent beauty of natural materials such as concrete, steel and cedar. A starter home, economics were considered along the way with sustainability issues. The house is heated with in-floor hydronic radiant heat and is […]

a project with SRG Partnership | cooperative with Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Bioproducts research focuses on creating new products from agricultural waste, primarily from Washington’s burgeoning wine industry. While the Bioproducts program creates valuable products from ordinary waste, the 57,000 sf building features economic materials detailed in extraordinary ways. To maximize a limited budget, Emily and the design team separated the classroom/office spaces from the labs, and created a distinct identity for each. The classrooms and offices are wrapped in […]

tigard library

September 27, 2012 by thearchitectskitchen

Project with SRG Partnership | The role of public libraries has evolved in recent years. Along with rapidly expanding collections, the new two-story building has spaces for community events, growing media and multilingual collections as well as an espresso bar. The carefully detailed brick and curtain wall maintains harmony with existing city structures while exposed fir decking provides warmth. The 48,000 sf library is located alongside the wetlands of Fanno Creek and is sited to maximize views and light. A […]

autumn oaks apartments

September 26, 2012 by thearchitectskitchen

Built in the early 70’s, the original 61-unit housing complex was planned with the auto in mind at the expense of livability. The driving aisles were wide and parking was situated directly outside of the front doors of the living units. Trash collection was right in the heart of the complex, and the sole common space was sparse and uninviting. Emily Réfi designed a solution to eliminate the “motel feel” and reign in the “sea of asphalt”. The site now […]

fire

September 30, 2012 by thearchitectskitchen

Design with Fire was a competition entry for 2012 Neocon Canada Exhibition creating a fireplace utilizing a specified gas fireplace insert. I was interested in designing something small-scale and made it a personal challenge to design and document in one <rather long> day. The K fireplace plays the role of everything you would expect from a traditional hearth – a place to gather with friends and family or just to curl up with a book, with plenty of nooks and […]
