The client has a large extended family and wanted a beach retreat large enough for everyone to stay. The design challenge was to make it feel cozy – both from a spatial and ecological standpoint for times the client would visit with his immediate family. I designed the home as a 2 separate units that could be rented out separately, or opened up for whole-house reunions. Most of the time, the client keeps the upper floor to himself and rents the lower floor.
My client acted as general contractor on the project. An important design feature was to have a viewing loft above the living area, cozy space to take in the ocean views and “storm watch”. This little loft turned out to be my favorite spot. The photos were taken at the end of the construction phase, the home is now complete.
