Gallaudet University (School for the deaf, Washington DC) Masterplan & Preliminary building design | freelance project with DKa
Emily has created preliminary design / planning studies of major campus districts where future development is planned concurrent with work on a Campus Master Plan. One example is the 6th Street Mixed-Use development at a prominent campus entry point which will contain both student and multi-family housing, retail, a Deaf History Museum and campus services. Emily developed the massing and design of the buildings using Gallaudet’s “DeafSpace” guidelines developed by DKa to enhance the user experience of the deaf and deaf/blind.
For instance, the storefronts are arranged in a saw-tooth configuration so the visually impaired can use reflections to improve navigation. Emily created the Sketchup models and V-ray Renderings along with Andrew Brorson.
