Design with Fire was a competition entry for 2012 Neocon Canada Exhibition creating a fireplace utilizing a specified gas fireplace insert. I was interested in designing something small-scale and made it a personal challenge to design and document in one <rather long> day.
The K fireplace plays the role of everything you would expect from a traditional hearth – a place to gather with friends and family or just to curl up with a book, with plenty of nooks and crannies for displaying photos, loved treasures and even firewood.
The “K” module makes for a highly customizable room-dividing fireplace enclosing the Ortal gas insert, serving as both structure and finish. The powder-coated steel modules are fastened to each other and and arranged in repeating patterns. The voids can be left open or infilled with non-combustible material where required or desired for privacy.
